Monocoque Cabin

Message from the Architect, Builder, and Host

Hello, and welcome!
We’re Pete & Rebecca founder of the Monocoque Cabin, and we’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks for choosing to stay with us.

We can’t wait to make your stay as memorable and enjoyable as possible.

If you’re curious about the story behind the Monocoque Cabin, here’s a brief overview. In 2023, we were thrilled to win the OMG! Fund competition by Airbnb, which provided us with the opportunity to bring this unique vision to life.

The term “monocoque” refers to a structural system where loads are supported by an object’s external skin, creating a strong, stiff, and lightweight structure – similar to an eggshell. This design concept is commonly used in aerospace and automotive engineering.

The Monocoque Cabin is inspired by the WWII de Havilland Mosquito, a fighter plane renowned for its innovative monocoque structure. We’ve drawn on this incredible design legacy to create a unique and striking cabin, crafted from various timber materials. These materials were chosen not only for their strength but for how they beautifully connect with the surrounding landscape, gracefully aging and developing a natural patina over time.

At first glance, the Monocoque Cabin stands as an example of organic architecture, seamlessly blending with its environment. Its flowing, ribbed form is highly sculptural, yet rationally designed to respond to its context and surroundings. Inside, the curvilinear structure creates a fluid, cohesive space where walls and ceilings merge into one. The warm, inviting interior materials and thoughtfully integrated furniture contribute to a sense of comfort and belonging.

We hope you enjoy the space as much as we enjoyed creating it!
